Insights help you monitor weather conditions that matter to your operations. By defining weather thresholds and applying them to saved locations, you can automatically identify forecasted impacts, monitor changing conditions through the Insights Timeline, and investigate weather events in greater detail. This guide explains how to create Insights, apply them to locations, and use the Dashboard and Timeline to monitor operational weather risks.
Creating an Insight
Insights are customizable rules that notify you when specific weather thresholds are met—helping you operationalize your protocols across locations.
To create a new Insight:
Navigate to the Insights tab in the main menu.
Click Create Insight.
-
Define your threshold conditions—for example:
Temperature below 0°C
Wind speed above 25 knots
Rainfall over 5 mm/hour
Select a severity level (e.g., Moderate, Severe, Extreme).
Add duration conditions (e.g., sustained for 15 minutes or more).
Optional: Use Average Conditions (for Polygon/Polyline locations only)
You may choose to enable the Use Average Conditions setting. This option calculates the average value of the selected weather parameter across the entire polygon/polyline.
Note: We recommend consulting with your Account Team or support before using this option, as this may not suit every operational need.
It is only available for polygon or polyline locations.
Some parameters are not supported. View the list of unsupported parameters →
Note about Operators: The "Use average conditions" setting affects how the system evaluates weather data over time—and it behaves differently depending on which operator you choose. Learn how to use insight operators with average conditions →
Apply tags to help organize by parameter, region, risk level, or operational category.
Once saved, your Insight is ready to be connected to locations.
Applying Insights to Locations
To monitor weather conditions using Insights, you’ll need to connect them to locations already saved in the platform. This can be done in two ways:
From the Locations Tab
Open the Locations tab.
Select one or more locations.
Click Edit Insights.
Choose the relevant Insights and apply them.
From a Single Location
Select a specific location.
Click Add Insights.
Choose the relevant Insights and click Add.
Once connected, these locations become monitored locations, and their weather thresholds will appear on your Dashboards.
Dashboards
Dashboards display your monitored locations and alert you when conditions from any connected Insight are forecasted.
To access the Dashboard:
Click the Dashboards icon in the main menu.
The dashboard continuously checks monitored locations for threshold matches and surfaces them in real-time.
Dashboard Features
Investigate Mode: View detailed data behind a triggered Insight to support decision-making.
Graph View: Explore all parameters tied to an Insight, with shaded areas marking threshold events.
MET/Aviation Integration: For aviation users, Insights include METAR and TAF sourcing, recent reports, and integrated validation tools.
Impacted Flights (Aviation)
For accounts with the Aviation Suite, the Insights Timeline can display flights impacted by forecasted weather events.
When an Insight affects airport operations, the timeline includes impacted arrivals and departures, allowing users to understand which flights may be affected alongside the weather event.
Note: This capability is available for accounts with the Private Flight Schedule feature enabled
Time Navigation: Toggle between hourly and minutely views (up to 6 hours) for high-resolution visibility.
Threshold Clarity: See whether an Insight uses "greater than," "less than," or "between" operators.
Polygon Impact Monitoring: Indicates what percent of a polygon/polyline location is affected over the event duration (available to all polygon-monitoring users).
Probability View (NextGen™ only): Layer probability data over the Investigate view.
Insight Rule Probability (NextGen™ only): Displays likelihood of weather thresholds being met.
Note: Only Admin users can create or modify Insights and Dashboards.
Exporting the Insights Timeline
You can export the Insights Timeline as a PDF to share weather impacts and operational context with team members or external stakeholders.
To export the timeline:
- Open the Insights Timeline block.
- Click Download as PDF.
The exported PDF includes the timeline visualization and associated event information. For aviation accounts, the exported PDF also includes impacted flight numbers and identifies each flight as an arrival or departure.
