Choosing the Right Storm Prediction Tool

Tomorrow.io provides several tools for forecasting and monitoring thunderstorms and lightning.

Thunderstorm Probability is designed for broader thunderstorm risk, which may include hazards such as lightning, heavy precipitation, strong winds, and hail. Lightning parameters focus specifically on lightning risk.

Choose the tool based on the weather risk affecting your operation and how far ahead you need guidance.

Which Tool Should I Use?

Thunderstorm Probability (Core Feature, Included)

Use Thunderstorm Probability when your main concern is thunderstorm development.

Within CONUS, Thunderstorm Probability provides standalone thunderstorm guidance for the first 36 hours.

For Classic forecasts and locations outside CONUS, Thunderstorm Probability depends on precipitation occurring and should be reviewed together with the precipitation forecast.

Lightning (Premium Feature)

Use Lightning to visually monitor lightning activity and development.

It is intended for situational awareness rather than as the primary forecast signal for an operational decision.

Lightning Probability (NextGen™ Customers)

Within CONUS, NextGen Lightning Probability provides standalone lightning guidance up to 36 hours ahead.

Use Lightning Probability when lightning itself is the primary hazard affecting your operation. Lightning Probability is available within CONUS only.

If you are concerned with thunderstorms more broadly, use Thunderstorm Probability instead.

Lightning Nowcast (NextGen™ Customers)

Use Lightning Nowcast for short-term lightning guidance over the next 60 minutes.

Lightning Nowcast uses a separate model from Lightning Probability and can provide an independent, short-term view of lightning risk. The two forecasts may not always agree, so Lightning Nowcast can be used as a second source of guidance as an operational decision approaches.
