  • Updated

Tomorrow.io’s platform provides detailed wind intelligence through the Dynamic Wind Layer, standard wind parameters, and—when available—the WAFS (World Area Forecast System) layer for winds aloft. These tools support decision-making in aviation, marine operations, energy, construction, and other weather-sensitive industries.

🌐 Wind data is available to all Tomorrow.io platform users. No additional access is required.

🔒 Winds aloft via the WAFS layer are a premium feature. For access, please contact your Account Team or sales@tomorrow.io.

Dynamic Wind Layer

The Dynamic Wind Layer offers a real-time visualization of surface wind movement, highlighting regional patterns and directional changes.

Key Features

  • Real-time animated streamlines
  • Direction and speed visuals at surface level (10m)
  • Improved situational awareness and flight-planning support

How to Access

  1. Open the interactive map on the Tomorrow.io platform
  2. In the bottom-left panel, enable the Dynamic Wind toggle
  3. The layer will overlay moving streamlines across the map

Wind Measurement Parameters

Wind data can be visualized across maps and dashboards, as well as in trend charts and alerts.

Parameter Description
Wind Speed Measures horizontal air movement at 10 meters above ground level, driven by pressure and temperature differences.
Wind Direction Indicates wind origin, measured in degrees clockwise from due north. Standardized at 10 meters.
Wind Gust Tracks short-duration wind surges (under 20 seconds) at 10 meters, useful for identifying peak wind risk.

Viewing Wind Data in the Platform

  • Navigate to the Trends sub-tab
  • Select wind-related parameters to visualize them in time-series charts
  • Use map overlays (e.g., green/yellow wind icons or streamlines) for at-a-glance monitoring

You can compare multiple locations or time periods, and overlay wind data with operational thresholds in dashboards or reports.

API Access for Developers

Wind data is available through Tomorrow.io’s API for real-time and forecast access.

Use cases include:

  • In-app wind alerts for aviation or port operations
  • Power grid stability modeling
  • Automated routing or drone management tools

Refer to our API documentation for implementation guidance.
