The Cross Winds Monitors feature enables calculation and monitoring of wind components—headwind, tailwind, and crosswindrelative to a defined direction of travel. It is designed for aviation and other operational contexts where wind direction and alignment critically impact safety and performance.

Overview

  • Parameters: Crosswind (speed and gust), Headwind, Tailwind

  • Forecast Range: Real-time and forecast

  • Supported Views: Map View, Dashboard, Insights, and Alerts

  • Supported Location Types: Insights are supported for point, polygon, polyline, and cluster locations.

Note for Aviation Users: For runway-level accuracy, we recommend using a polyline location aligned with the runway heading. This enables more precise crosswind, headwind, and tailwind monitoring along the operational direction.

Location Direction Setup

Wind component monitoring requires a defined Direction for each location, representing the operational heading in degrees clockwise from true north.

How to Set Direction:

If you're monitoring a runway, first create a polyline location that aligns with the runway's heading.

Then:

  1. Go to the Locations page

  2. Select your polyline (or other location type)

  3. Edit the Direction field (0–359°, measured clockwise from true north)

  4. Save changes

Insights and Alerts

Creating an Insight

  • Navigate to the Insights tab

  • Select the wind component(s):

    • Crosswind

    • Headwind

    • Tailwind

  • Define thresholds (e.g., Crosswind Gust > 25 kt)

  • Choose any supported location type with a direction set

Configuring Alerts

  • Use the Insight to trigger alerts

  • Options include start, end, all-clear, and prior notice

  • Delivery methods: Email, SMS, and app push notifications

Notes

  • Direction must be set per location to activate component calculations

  • This feature is most useful for aviation takeoff/landing monitoring, railway and road safety, and UAV operations
