The Custom Assets API allows organizations to bring their own operational data into Tomorrow.io — such as fleets, routes, warehouses, or other critical assets — to create a unified, weather-aware operational view. (Uploading and visualizing feeds on the platform is a free core feature!)
Once uploaded, assets can be monitored, managed, and analyzed directly within the platform, enabling more context-aware decision-making and operational workflows. (Monitoring and applying weather insights to these assets is a premium feature).
To view and manage custom assets within Aviation Management, see the dedicated Aviation Asset Management article.
Business Use Cases
Custom Assets enable a wide range of operational scenarios, including:
- Logistics and Fleet Operations: Visualize and monitor trucks, delivery routes, or vessels directly on the map
- Aviation Dispatch and Maintenance: Upload flight routes, ground equipment, or airfield assets for real-time awareness
- Energy and Utilities: Track infrastructure, substations, or work crews against live weather conditions
- Event and Facility Management: Display key locations such as warehouses, venues, or field sites with associated metadata
Key Capabilities
- Bring Your World into the Platform: Upload private assets (static, moving, or grouped) with custom attributes such as type, driver, cargo, or status
- Dynamic Updates: Continuously update asset positions or properties to reflect real-time operational changes
- Organized Feeds: Manage assets by feed, each with its own layer and configuration
- AI-Ready Context: Assets become part of the operational context used by AI agents like Gale
How It Works
1. Use the Private Assets API to upload your organization’s assets
2. Assign each feed a descriptive name (e.g., “Fleet East,” “Distribution Centers”):
3. Assets appear as a map layer in the platform
4. Assets can include static and dynamic attributes for real-time visibility:
Asset Monitoring and Management
Once asset feeds are uploaded, they can be managed and monitored directly within the platform.
A centralized directory provides visibility into all operational feeds, including:
- Asset counts per feed
- Active monitor coverage
- Direct actions to configure monitoring
How monitoring works
- Locations feeds: Monitors apply to individual locations
- Asset feeds: Monitors apply to the entire feed, covering all assets within it:
This allows teams to scale monitoring across large asset groups without configuring alerts per asset.
Asset Insights Dashboard
The Asset Insights Dashboard extends monitoring beyond the map, providing a prioritized, operational view of your assets.
Instead of manually identifying impacted assets on the map, the dashboard automatically surfaces what requires attention.
Key capabilities
- View all assets (flights, vehicles, sites, etc.) in a single dashboard
- Group assets by feed
- Automatically sort by forecasted weather impact
- Surface severity and timing per asset
This creates a prioritized list to support faster and more informed operational decisions.
Additional details
- Only assets crossing defined impact thresholds are surfaced
- Route feeds configured with monitoring (via backend) will also appear in the dashboard
Note: Monitoring for route feeds is not yet supported directly in the platform.
Limits and Access
- Upload and manage asset feeds using your account API key or through the Feed Management block in Labs
- Rate limits follow standard API usage policies
- Monitoring capabilities depend on your account configuration and licensed features
Example Use Case
A logistics company uploads its delivery fleet via the Custom Assets API, tagging each vehicle with cargo type and route.
Dispatchers can:
- Monitor all vehicles in a single view
- Automatically identify which assets are impacted by weather
- Prioritize actions based on severity and timing
