Tomorrow.io supports monitoring of large geographic areas using polygons and polylines.
This capability allows customers to track weather impacts at the scale of counties, zip codes, or even entire regions, extending Tomorrow.io’s monitoring and alerting tools to enterprise-scale operations.
🔒 This is a premium feature. To learn more or request access, please contact your Tomorrow.io account team or sales@tomorrow.io.
Business Use Cases
Large-area monitoring enables visibility and risk assessment across wide geographies for:
Insurance and claims management — assess storm or flood impact coverage at scale.
Public safety and emergency response — evaluate hazard exposure across cities, districts, or entire service zones.
By removing polygon size limits, organizations can apply Tomorrow.io’s monitoring infrastructure to very large operational areas while maintaining accuracy and responsiveness.
Key Capabilities
Expanded area support: Monitor polygons and polylines far larger than standard asset footprints.
Impact visualization: View where each monitored condition is expected to occur within a large region.
Percent impacted: Automatically calculate what portion of the polygon is affected by an event.
Condition-level investigation: When an active Insight is triggered, open a dedicated map to explore impacted areas for that specific rule.
How It Works
Create an Insight using a polygon or a polyline as the monitored location.
-
When an Insight is triggered, the polygon will display:
A new “Impact Map” option — opening a focused map view that highlights only the affected regions for the active condition.
Note: Investigation is available only when there is an active Insight on the polygon/polyline locationת and is valid for all polygons/polylines.
The percentage of total area affected.
Impacted areas shaded on the map.
Current Limitations
Only one condition can be displayed per investigation view. Combined-condition overlays (viewing multiple rules simultaneously) are not yet supported.
Very large polygons refresh at a slightly lower resolution than standard polygons/polylines, though rates remain faster than typical industry standards.
-
Maximum supported size:
Polygon: 50,000 km² (approximately 19,300 square miles)
Polyline: 50,000 km (approximately 31,000 miles)
