NextGen™ is Tomorrow.io’s advanced forecasting layer, designed to deliver improved accuracy, probability-based insight rules, and hyperlocal weather intelligence. This guide outlines the key features of NextGen™ and how to use them effectively.

Accessing NextGen™

To toggle between Classic and NextGen™ views:

1. Locate the view toggle switch in your dashboard

2. Select NextGen™ to activate enhanced map layers, probability forecasts, and improved data visualizations

Key Features

Enhanced Map Visualizations

• Updated display layers with clearer probability overlays

• Improved interpretation of forecast uncertainty and likelihoods

Probability Forecasts

• Supports planning and risk management through probabilistic outlooks

• Data displayed for full forecast window: from 7 days in the past to 14 days ahead

Insight Rule Probability

• View the likelihood that a defined insight (e.g., threshold exceedance) will occur

• Enables advanced alerting strategies using probability instead of binary thresholds

NextGen™ supports probability forecasts for:

• Temperature

• Dew Point Temperature

• Relative Humidity

• Wind Speed and Wind Gust

• Surface Visibility

• Surface Pressure

• Mean Sea Level Pressure

• Precipitation Rate

• Cloud Base

• Cloud Ceiling

• Cloud Cover

⚠️ C-BAM (Customizable Baseline for Atmospheric Modeling) is not currently supported in NextGen™ view. Switch to Classic view to access C-BAM data.

Additional Capabilities

• Timeline & Trend Probability Spread: Visualize forecast probabilities across time for long-range operational planning

• Insight Rules Probability View: Evaluate the probability of an insight being triggered by forecasted conditions

• Insight Investigation: Dive into the data behind triggered insights to understand the full operational context

• Probability in Reports : Include probability data in Weather Reports using the Trends widget, allowing you to share probabilistic forecasts externally with the same context available in the platform

NextGen™ Unified Precipitation

Tomorrow.io’s Global Space Precipitation product powers Unified Precipitation (UP) with satellite-enhanced data.

Key improvements include:

• Improved Accuracy: Increases forecast accuracy by 5–10%, outperforming public datasets like IMERG-Early

• Broader Coverage: Adds real-time data in regions lacking radar (e.g., Western US)

• Higher Resolution: Hyperlocal forecasts at 5km spatial resolution

• Frequent Updates: Refreshed every 5 minutes to support rapid-response use cases

Integration Notes

If you're using CBAM:

• Switch to Classic View to access CBAM datasets

• Use the view toggle to move between Classic and NextGen™ modes based on data needs
