The active fires layer on the map view from the platform is different from a fire index. It does not only correspond to current active fires. When turned on, the active fire layer will enable icons of flames on the map. Each flame is labeled according to its certainty category, either Likely or Observed.

Actual active fires are labeled observed whereas the rest of the icons provide geo-located points representing fire hotspots, locations on the map where the satellite-based analysis system records evidence of a potential fire.
