Tomorrow.io’s platform provides two core tools for fire monitoring and situational awareness: the Fire Index and the Active Fires Layer. These layers support disaster preparedness, safety planning, and real-time response.

Active Fires Layer

This map layer displays real-time fire detection data based on satellite inputs. Each flame icon represents a point of interest, categorized by certainty:

Icon Type Description
Observed Confirmed active fire detected
Likely High-confidence hotspot likely associated with fire activity, not yet confirmed

To view this layer:

  1. Open the Map View
  2. Toggle on the Active Fires layer
  3. Use zoom and filtering tools to explore areas of interest

Fire Index (Fosberg FWI)

The Fosberg Fire Weather Index (FWI) quantifies potential fire behavior severity based on forecasted weather conditions.

  • Scale: 0 to 100 (higher values indicate more intense fire conditions)
  • Inputs: Wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity

Update Frequency and Coverage

Global (Realtime) Hourly Observational only
United States Hourly Up to 17 hours forecast
Global (Forecast) Every 6 hours Forecast availability

Viewing Fire Data on the Platform

To explore fire risk or detection data:

  1. Navigate to the Trends tab
  2. Select Fire Index or Active Fires from the parameter list
  3. View data visualized on the map in yellow (FWI) and icon markers (Fires)
