Tomorrow.io’s platform provides two core tools for fire monitoring and situational awareness: the Fire Index and the Active Fires Layer. These layers support disaster preparedness, safety planning, and real-time response.

Active Fires Layer
This map layer displays real-time fire detection data based on satellite inputs. Each flame icon represents a point of interest, categorized by certainty:
Icon Type | Description |
---|---|
Observed | Confirmed active fire detected |
Likely | High-confidence hotspot likely associated with fire activity, not yet confirmed |
To view this layer:
- Open the Map View
- Toggle on the Active Fires layer
- Use zoom and filtering tools to explore areas of interest
Fire Index (Fosberg FWI)
The Fosberg Fire Weather Index (FWI) quantifies potential fire behavior severity based on forecasted weather conditions.
- Scale: 0 to 100 (higher values indicate more intense fire conditions)
- Inputs: Wind speed, temperature, and relative humidity
Update Frequency and Coverage
Region | Update Frequency | Forecast Range |
---|---|---|
Global (Realtime) | Hourly | Observational only |
United States | Hourly | Up to 17 hours forecast |
Global (Forecast) | Every 6 hours | Forecast availability |
