The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index measures environmental heat stress by combining multiple variables into a single, actionable metric. It is widely used in occupational safety, sports, and industrial operations to guide health and safety decisions in high-heat environments.

🔒 This feature is part of Tomorrow.io’s premium offering. To enable access, contact your Tomorrow.io Account Team or sales@tomorrow.io.

What WBGT Measures

WBGT integrates the following environmental factors:

Component Description
Air Temperature Ambient (dry bulb) temperature, measured in the shade
Humidity Moisture in the air, affecting evaporative cooling
Wind Speed Influences heat dissipation and cooling
Solar Radiation Accounts for direct sun exposure

⚠️ WBGT values are most relevant above 20°C (68°F) and are not intended for evaluating cold stress.

How to View WBGT on the Platform

To visualize WBGT conditions in your area:

  1. Log in to your Tomorrow.io account
  2. Navigate to the Map View
  3. Open the Trends tab

Example Use Cases

  • Workplace Safety – Enforce hydration breaks, rest periods, and scheduling adjustments for outdoor or industrial teams
  • Sports & Events – Monitor conditions to determine safe thresholds for athletic activities
  • Industrial Operations – Protect heat-sensitive equipment and ensure safe operating conditions

API Access for Developers

WBGT data is also available through the Tomorrow.io API.

With API access, developers can:

  • Retrieve real-time WBGT values
  • Set automated alerts for threshold exceedance
  • Integrate WBGT insights into custom platforms or dashboards

Visit the API documentation or use the AI-powered API Assistant for setup guidance.

Additional Considerations

  • WBGT values below 20°C are typically not used in operational decisions
  • Use WBGT in combination with temperature, humidity, and wind layers for context
  • Align WBGT thresholds with your industry’s safety standards
