The Map Annotation Tool allows you to draw, label, and highlight areas directly on your weather map. This tool is especially useful for aviation and drone operations, where clear visual communication of weather patterns and timelines is critical. You can define the timeframe of each annotation, save annotated maps, and share them across teams or include them in reports.
*Map Annotation is available to all users
Use Cases
-
Highlight areas of expected turbulence, storms, or visibility concerns
-
Mark operational zones or restricted airspace for UAS missions
-
Share annotated weather maps in pre-flight briefings or executive summaries
-
Create SIGMET-like visuals with defined time validity
Accessing the Tool
-
Go to the platform map.
- Click on the Draw on Map icon.
-
Click the Annotate button on the map toolbar (see screenshot below).
-
The Annotation Panel will open on the right side of the screen.
Annotation Tools & Features
The following tools are available in the side panel:
Tool | Description |
---|---|
Freehand Draw | Draw lines or shapes freely on the map. |
Text Boxes | Add custom text for notes, alerts, or zone names. |
Stickers | Use pre-loaded weather icons such as wind, lightning, and storm symbols. |
Line Settings | Adjust thickness, color, and opacity. |
Shape Editing | Move, resize, rotate, or delete annotations. |
Undo/Redo | Step back or forward in your changes. |
Time Validity Settings
Each annotation can be given a start and end time to define its relevance. This is particularly helpful for creating time-bound alerts or highlighting weather conditions valid within a specific operational window.
To set time validity:
-
Select the annotation.
-
Use the time controls at the bottom of the annotation panel.
-
Define the start and end times for visibility on the map.
Saving & Sharing Annotations
-
Saving: Annotations are saved as a new layer in your account. You can revisit or modify them later.
-
Metadata: Each annotation includes metadata such as creator name, date of creation, and a description field.
-
Sharing: Annotations can be captured in a map screenshot or included in your forecast and daily reports.
-
Permissions: Only users with the right permissions can edit or delete annotations.
Best Practices
-
Use consistent color coding for risk levels (e.g., red for high-impact areas).
-
Set validity time windows to match weather briefings or forecast cycles.
-
Combine annotations with operational insights for enriched map visuals.
