Alert Types
SIGMETs (Significant Meteorological Information)
Issued for serious weather phenomena that may impact aircraft safety:

Hazards Covered: Convective thunderstorms, turbulence, icing, volcanic ash, IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) conditions, and mountain obscuration

Coverage: Global, segmented by FIR (Flight Information Region)

The entire CONUS (Contiguous United States) is treated as one alert region

Alert Content: Hazard type, severity, altitude range, movement, and validity period
Volcanic Ash Advisories
Issued by Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (VAACs):

Regions Covered: Washington, London, and Toulouse VAACs (additional centers planned for 2025)

Alert Content: Volcano name, ash cloud height, movement direction, affected airspace, and advisory status (new/updated/all-clear)
How Alerts Work

Trigger: Alerts are issued when a new SIGMET or VAAC bulletin is published, updated, or canceled

Deep Links: Each alert includes a link to the map layer centered on the affected region

Alert Duration: All alerts are valid for up to 4 hours from issuance

How to Set Up Alerts
