Are Insight Categories tied directly to the National Weather Service (NWS)?

Insight Categories are bucketed into groups to monitor for information provided by the NWS. For example, when using the 'winter' insight category, this will pull data to see if there is any active NWS advisory issued at the location entered for the call.

Of note, any information provided for the National Weather Service is only available in the continental United States and Canada.
